Here's a charming picture of friends and family made by Violet when she was just ten years old! It looks like water colour, perhaps from a children's paint box.

This picture was how I found out that her young brother John Bertrand Courtenaye was known as Jack.  In the earlier drafts of the book, I'd called him Bert.
